The One Sure Thing

Come and see Carolyn’s monologue ‘Stick’ as part of the Australian Theatre for Young People’s fantastic showcase The One Sure Thing, directed by Tanya Goldberg.

[Stick] is, by turns, crushing and laugh-out-loud funny.

Burns has balanced the writing beautifully. The tragedy of the situation is off-set and hilighted by a chavelier sense of humour. The performance by Emma Campbell is confident and clear, she takes her time to digest our silent responses – or her own thoughts.

It was perhaps Carolyn Burns’ Stick that was the most poignant monologue of the evening, detailing the coping mechanism of a young and defiant but ultimately conflicted young girl (Emma Campbell) facing the long road of chronic illness.

Careers for Attractive Ladies

Great news! Our first play, Careers for Attractive Ladies, is heading to the Sydney Fringe in September.  We’ll update the site with more details as we get closer to the festival.

Welcome!

The Spinster and the Whippet is a theatre collective founded by Jenna Martin and Carolyn Burns in late 2009.  We are committed to writing and producing exciting new works for Australian audiences.

We aim to:

… produce engaging, intelligent, political relevant theatre.

… provide critical perspectives on Australian culture and politics.

… always feature exciting and substantive roles for female performers.

What we’re up to now:

The Spinster and the Whippet is currently in the final stages of developing a two act play for submission to the inaugural Sydney Fringe Festival.  We are also currently writing a shorter comedic work on the subject of the upcoming Australian federal election.

Script editor, on revising the new play:

“I think I’m going to need a bigger pencil.”

Chaos and Confusion

“I felt as if my mind existed on two storeys. The upper storey of my head was chaos and confusion, which had to be reduced to order. The heroes of my play were so demanding that they caused me a great deal of mental agony. Each one wanted the right words to say, each one tried to play the lead and push the others aside. Steering the play in the right direction was extremely exhausting work.”

From Mikhail Bulgakov’s Black Snow, a hilarious little novel about writing a play.
